It was time for our prototype The New Era to come out into the daylight and leave the La Ciotat construction site. And what better opportunity than to present the world’s first hydrogen-powered pleasure yacht for two days on the terrace of the prestigious Yacht Club de Monaco? This year, the Y.C.M. organized a congress on the theme of “Hydrogen and the yachting of tomorrow”. It was held from September 22 to 23, 2020.

A very remarkable outing for our hydrogen yacht The New Era

A very symbolic moment for the whole HYNOVA team.

We were really looking forward to presenting our first HYNOVA 40, what’s more, in such a prestigious place: the Yacht Club de Monaco.

This year, the Yacht Club de Monaco organized a major event around the advent of hydrogen. The congress, called “Hydrogen and Yachting of Tomorrow”, was held on September 22, 2020.

The conference began with an environmental assessment, including the level of greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. An important step to underline the importance and urgency of the ecological transition.

Then, in the presence of H.S.H. Sovereign Prince Albert II, President of the Yacht Club de Monaco, several speakers explained the advantages of hydrogen as an alternative to the use of diesel.

Our demonstration yacht, The New Era, was just a few meters from the speakers and attracted a lot of attention. HYNOVA was cited as an example for the concrete application of the green hydrogen solution during the conference.

Mike Horn was the guest of honour

Among all the yachting enthusiasts present at the congress, Mike Horn was the guest of honor of the Yacht Club de Monaco. We had the immense joy of exchanging at length with him.

The day of the 23rd was punctuated by visits and presentations of our demonstrator The New Era. The yachting enthusiasts, received by invitation, were all very enthusiastic to discover the pure and modern lines of our yacht The New Era. It was also an opportunity for them to learn more about the concepts of electro-hydrogen and green hydrogen engines. The big star of these presentations was undoubtedly our fuel cell, developed by Eodev, our partner. We tell you more about it below.

Our hydrogen-powered production yacht solution is a unique concept in the world. Indeed, The New Era is the first yacht using hydrogen stored on board. This way, it cruises without polluting.

Cruising without impact

The electro-hydrogen technology of our boat is designed by Energy Observer Developments (Energy Observer’s R&D subsidiary). Our hydrogen yacht is equipped with REXH2 (Range Extender Hydrogen). This is a zero-emission, silent and hybrid hydrogen-electric process. It remains a safe and sustainable ecological innovation to supply green energy to an electric motor.

“In addition to thinking and designing tenders that have the least possible impact on the environment, I want to inform, promote and advance the share of green hydrogen in tomorrow’s world, and make HYNOVA YACHTS a link in the change towards new modes of behavior. It is a way to participate, at my level, in tomorrow’s ecological transition”.

Chloé Zaied – CEO of HYNOVA

Beyond this innovation in marine propulsion, HYNOVA’s ambition is to promote green hydrogen as a new non-polluting energy source. Indeed, green hydrogen is an efficient renewable energy storage solution. It therefore allows to reliably use surplus production from wind, solar, or tidal power at any other time.

In September, a lot happened, including The New Era, our demonstrator changed sites. HYNOVA also took part in the Ever exhibition in Monaco, in the presence of HSH Prince Albert, to present our hydrogen-powered yacht solution. Moreover, it was our first official show. So we will come back on the highlights of this event dedicated to renewable energies.

At the same time, the construction of our demonstrator The New Era is coming to an end; and we have started the long series of finishing touches to present an innovative and functional tender. We have taken some pictures to let you experience with us the progress of the work!

Work under pressure

It was a real pleasure to exchange regularly with all the professionals who collaborated to present as soon as possible our demonstrator The New Era. Indeed, each step was crucial because all the trades had to be coordinated in order not to lose time. And we are delighted with the result because the boat was able to be presented at the congress “Hydrogen and Yachting of Tomorrow” organized by the Yacht Club de Monaco. We will talk about it again. Among all the many service providers who worked on the demonstrator while it was still at the La Ciotat shipyards, we can thank the teams of Dr. Schutz France, Once Design Vichy, and Deldisenio. They were able to be reactive and even creative so that the yacht was ready to be exhibited as soon as it left the shipyards.

A must in the renewable energy sector

The Ever Monaco exhibition is a key event among the actors of the renewable energy sector. Every year, for three days, the Ever Monaco exhibition is a real theater of international meetings. The themes addressed are Ecological Vehicles and Renewable Energies. It therefore seemed only natural for us to take part in such an event, and to be able to present HYNOVA. The first hydrogen-powered pleasure yachts marketed as standard in the world.

Enriching encounters at the cutting edge of technology

For this exhibition, we were at the side of our partner, CLYD. It was an opportunity to present our hydrogen yacht solution to dozens of people invested in the environment, including HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco. We were delighted with each of our exchanges, and our concept was very warmly welcomed throughout these three days of the show.

“In addition to technological innovation, I wanted to offer a top-of-the-range boat model with sleek, futuristic lines. Respect for the environment doesn’t have to be boring or sad.

Next meeting: the Yacht Club de Monaco

Following this show, the Yacht Club de Monaco generously invited Chloé Zaied, our CEO, to present our demonstrator The New Era at their “Hydrogen and Yachting of Tomorrow” event. This event was held on September 22nd of this year 2020 in the presence of Mike Horn, guest of honor. We’ll take a look behind the scenes in the next article.

Our demonstrator, The New Era, deserved its exhibition on the 3rd terrace of this prestigious establishment. We won’t tell you more, it will be the subject of our next article! The photographs that we realized by drone are magnificent, and illustrate well all the greatness of this event.

While unfortunately this year, the Monaco Yacht Club was unable to organize its famous race, an “online” edition took place from June 30 to July 4, 2020.

The Solar & Energy Boat Challenge promotes zero-emission propulsion and brings together many players from the world of yachting, energy, researchers and academics, future engineers and inventors.

A 7th edition and a reinvented contest

The competition took place online this year and HYNOVA wanted to take part to publicize its innovative fuel cell electric yacht solution powered by hydrogen stored on board, in this competition which rewards the least polluting propulsion solution possible. HYNOVA was one of the five winners, winning the jury’s “Coup de Coeur” prize in this edition, which welcomed a number of international teams, each more motivated than the last, with truly innovative concepts that will bring future responsible solutions to the world of yachting.

Next event: the Cannes Yachting Festival

HYNOVA, alongside ENERGY OBSERVER DEVELOPMENTS (EODev), will be present at the next Cannes Yachting Festival from 8 to 13 September 2020, on the Old Port side, to present its first tender yacht, The New Era and in particular the REXH2 (Hydrogen Range Extender) solution designed by EODev to contribute to the development of a zero-emission maritime mobility. You will be able to discover the technology used to design this first hydrogen-powered yacht on the stand held by our technology partner ENERGY OBSERVER DEVELOPMENTS.

IMPORTANT NOTE: During the Cannes Yachting Festival, the boat and the technology will be visible; however, due to production and certification delays related to the pandemic and containment, it will not be possible to consider sailing during the show. On-water demonstrations will take place at a later date, as the media can take advantage of the Cannes Yachting Festival to visit us and indicate their interest in participating in such a session.

As you may have noticed, on our site and in our communications, the jellyfish symbol comes up regularly. Some of you know the history of HYNOVA and how this totem animal of the brand is a source of inspiration and even wonder. Rest assured, we do not intend to give you a lecture on this cnidarian. We would just like to share with you the elements that make this creature, sometimes described as fascinating, sometimes frightening or even passive, appear to us at HYNOVA as an essential, different, innovative, immortal, adapted, efficient form of life.

1 – It was not born out of the last rainfall

Firstly, the jellyfish is an animal whose ancestors appeared 650 million years ago, the fact that they have changed little since then tends to show that they are relatively well adapted despite all the upheavals that the Earth has experienced since then. The ancestors of the human being, Homo Sapiens, seem to have appeared on Earth only 700,000 years ago. This is not a comparison but a point of reference, they have been sailing much longer than we have.

2 – She sees and decides on her navigation plan

Another amazing fact: the jellyfish is not so passive as you might think, it propels itself….intentionally (more or less, sometimes the currents that drive it suit it perfectly) and even chooses its direction according to the stimuli it receives and analyses. For this it has specific organs much more complex than we thought until now. The most curious can even learn that they have some kind of primitive eyes (you can search for ocelli on Google ? ).

3 – The word jellyfish is quite reductive

Did you know that the word jellyfish, which includes an impressive number of species, actually represents only the “mature” life form of this cnidarian and that it also often exists as a polyp in its “early youth”? The anthropomorphism used here has no other purpose than to schematize this surprising characteristic (and also to bring you to more sympathy towards this species).

Wikipedia Dot: The stages of development of a jellyfish. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Méduse_(animal)#/media /Fichier:Schleiden-meduse-2.jpg

Development and fixation of the planula larva (stages 1 to 4) ; development polyp (stages 5 to 10)) ; strobile (stage 11) ; ephyra (stage 12) ; young jellyfish (stage 13) ; adult jellyfish (stage 14).

4 – Stronger than dolphins? (And yet we love dolphins)

The jellyfish is hyper “designed” to save energy while being efficient:

Biophysical research suggests that jellyfish swim more efficiently than any other aquatic animal: “the contractions of the umbrella create high and low pressure zones around their bodies that both suck them in (suction phenomenon) and propel them forward (thrust phenomenon). Suction has the effect that one third of their propulsion is achieved without muscular action. They thus consume less oxygen and energy, in proportion to their size, than dolphins or sharks. The movements of the edge of the bell have the effect of making the annular vortex (low pressure zone) descend below the animal, which causes pressurized water to rise inside the bell and give it a second thrust. This efficient propulsion could be a source of bio-inspiration for mechanical engineers…” and innovative yacht designers ;).

5 – They are immortal!

Potentially, not all of them, not all the time, it depends … nevertheless, it is still very strong ! Turritopsis nutricula is a species of jellyfish which measures 4 to 5 mm and is native to the Caribbean Sea. It has the particularity of being able to return from the jellyfish stage to the polyp stage, which makes it theoretically immortal. It actually reverses the aging process. We talk about important transformations that take place in the adult stage, a bit like if a frog became a tadpole again or a butterfly became a caterpillar again.

6 – They are magnificent

Well, not all of them, and we don’t necessarily appreciate their beauty in all circumstances, but we have to admit it: they are still design!

7 – Some are bioluminescent

Like many other marine species, some jellyfish can create light, often blue or green. This is the result of a chemical reaction that allows jellyfish to be seen in the dark. They can even “blink” like a Christmas tree.
